Pumpkin Spice Guayusa Latte (Hot or Iced)

Pumpkin spice guayusa latte in a mug with a pumpkin, cinnamon sticks and guayusa leaves

A cozy fall cup made with real pumpkin, warm spice and a strong base of Traditional guayusa, the Amazonian leaf with natural caffeine. Make it hot on a cold night or shake it over ice. It's ready in about 15 minutes.

At a glance

  • Makes: 1 mug (about 8 oz) · Prep: 5 min · Steep: 7–10 min · Total: about 15 min
  • Recommended guayusa: Traditional (rich and bold)
  • Caffeine: about 66 mg with 2 full teaspoons (about 4 g) of loose leaf; about 41 mg with a 2.5 g tea bag or about 82 mg with a 5 g bag

Ingredients

  • 2 full teaspoons Traditional Guayusa Loose Leaf (or 1 Traditional guayusa tea bag)
  • 4 oz boiling water
  • 4 oz milk or oat milk
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin purée
  • ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, plus a pinch to finish
  • 1–2 teaspoons maple syrup, to taste

Instructions

  1. Brew a strong base. Steep the guayusa in 4 oz of boiling water for 7–10 minutes. Strain.
  2. Make the pumpkin milk. Warm the milk with the pumpkin purée, pumpkin pie spice and maple syrup, and whisk until frothy.
  3. Pour. Pour the guayusa into a mug and top with the pumpkin milk. Dust with a pinch of spice.

Iced version

Let the guayusa base cool. Shake it with cold milk, the pumpkin purée, spice and maple syrup in a jar with a lid, then pour over ice.

Tip: Using only half the water makes the base stronger, so the guayusa flavor comes through the milk and pumpkin. Steep closer to 10 minutes for an even bolder cup.

Why Traditional guayusa?

Traditional guayusa is rich and bold, with a deep amber color that stands up to milk, pumpkin and spice. Our leaves come from small-scale farmers in Archidona, in Ecuador's Amazon rainforest. They're picked by hand, air-dried and never smoked.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much caffeine is in a pumpkin spice guayusa latte?

About 66 mg with 2 full teaspoons (about 4 g) of Traditional loose leaf. With a tea bag, it's about 41 mg (2.5 g bag) or about 82 mg (5 g bag). Pumpkin, spice and milk add no caffeine. Caffeine varies a little from harvest to harvest, so treat these as approximate figures.

Can I make it dairy-free?

Yes. Oat milk froths well and works great here. Almond or any other plant milk works too.

Can I make it without pumpkin purée?

Yes. Skip the purée and use a little extra pumpkin pie spice and maple syrup. It will be lighter and less creamy, but still warm and spiced.

Can I use guayusa tea bags instead of loose leaf?

Yes. Steep 1 Traditional guayusa tea bag in 4 oz of boiling water for 7–10 minutes, then follow the same steps.

Can I make the guayusa base ahead of time?

Yes. Brew a few servings, let them cool and keep them in the fridge. It's the easiest way to make the iced version.
